Prince William County Circuit Court 2009: Mr. Mantzoros was the front car in a 3-car collision on I-95. At the scene of the accident he was walking around checking on the other drivers. He only had some stiffness in his back. but he had a history of back problems for over 20 years. His wife spoke with him over the phone and said that he was “out of it”. Several weeks after the accident he had continuing headaches, fatigue, unexplained vision changes, memory loss and mood changes. Several months after the accident and after several doctors could not determine his problem, he was diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury. His brain injury had also affected his pituitary gland requiring him to take injections of human growth hormones. The medical bills for treatment of his brain injury related symptoms were about $15,000. The defense argued that he was just depressed and that the back pain he had for all the years before the accident was to blame. Thirty days before the trial date, both sides agreed to submit the case to mediation and it was settled at mediation for $150,000.00.
