Wills

Most of us do not like to dwell on planning for the end of our lives.  However, we need to insure that once we are gone, our loved ones are not burdened with trying to determine how we wanted our estate to be distributed.  Moreover, the lack of a will can lead to family feuds and possibly litigation.  A will is merely a signed document that may appoint an executor and may direct what is to be done with a person’s property after their death.  Most people do not require an elaborate will, but it should be drafted by an attorney to avoid problems with legal pitfalls.

When getting a will, you should also consider a Power of Attorney and Advanced Medical Directive.  Should you become incapcitated and unable to conduct your own affairs, a  Power of Attorney will allow your appointee to act in your behalf.  An Advanced Medical Directive expresses your desires not to have extraordinary life-extending medical measures in the event that you are severly injured and incapcitated.

At HammondTownsend, we offer Wills, Power of Attorney, and Advanced Medical Directives.  Please call us to set an appointment to discuss these important documents.  This is something that should be taken care sooner rather than later.  Remember, if you are in a position that requires these documents and you did not have them done ahead of time, it will be too late.
